YEAR 7 & 8 PLAYER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

Player Development Programme (PDP)

Netball Wairarapa delivers the Player Development Programme (PDP) through a two-day pre-season programme. These sessions are open to Year 7 and 8 players who are engaged in the Wairarapa region schools netball competitions.

The PDP follows an age and stage–appropriate approach, with a strong focus on developing fundamental skill sets, court awareness, and safe and effective movement. Players are expected to be positive participants—good listeners, willing to work alongside players from different schools, and open to giving new skills a go while taking on feedback from coaches.

Programme Purpose

Growth and development occur at all ages and stages of a player’s netball journey. Participation in the PDP at this age is not an indicator of future success in netball. Instead, the programme is designed to support and strengthen fundamental movement skills and core netball competencies, helping players feel confident and prepared for the next stage of their development pathway.

What Players Will Learn

Coaches will guide players through the development of key netball skills, including:

  • Turning on the ball

  • Passing into space

  • Body balance and footwork

  • Spatial awareness

  • Effective movement through the court

The programme also introduces foundational game concepts

Players will additionally take part in age-appropriate strength and conditioning activities from NetballSmart, with an emphasis on:

  • Single-leg balance

  • Safe and effective take-off and landing mechanics

These components support injury prevention and promote long-term movement confidence.

Programme Dates

Wednesday 8th April 2026 9am - 3pm

Thursday 9th April 2026 9am - 3pm

Cost

$130 per player, which includes a PDP t-shirt.

Once an invoice has been issued, players/parents are liable for full payment.

Development Sessions

The PDP relies heavily on the support of volunteer coaches. In the event that sufficient coaching support is not available, this initiative may revert to the delivery model used in previous seasons. However, Netball Wairarapa is committed to doing its best to develop and grow all players and coaches who are willing to put in the effort.
